Thematic Analysis Flashcards
Thematic Analysis: Definition?
Identifying & describing explicit and implicit ideas within data
Combine elements from number of approaches into one methodological framework
Involvement and interpretation from researcher
What is Thematic Analysis?
Method use for identifying, analysing and reporting patterns within qualitative data
Minimally organises and describes data set in rich detail
What is Confirmatory Analysis
Tests pre-determined idea
Deductive approaches (Content analysis, Template Analysis)
Structured procedure
What is Exploratory Analysis
Inductive Approach
Emphasizes what emerges between researcher and respondent
Requires interpretative skill from researcher
Data not rich - analysis will be lacking
Explain Coding in Thematic Analysis
Code is a label attached to selection of text identifying it as relating to a theme
Used to categorise text and develop theory
Applied to ‘unit’ of textual data
How can themes be identified? Two ways
Deductive (top down): Driven by specific research question
Inductive (bottom up): Themes are linked to data

What is a Theme?
Patterns within data
Commonly recurring topic
What are Analytical Notes?
Notes to remind researcher of ideas/thoughts present during early analysis (procedural & analytic memos)
