what is theft?
the act of STEALING: WRONGFUL TAKING and CARRYING AWAY personal goods or property of another with the INTENT of DEPRIVING them of it
what is larceny?
same as theft WRONGFUL TAKING and CARRYING AWAY personal goods or property of another with the INTENT of DEPRIVING them of it, taker will CONVERT it to their OWN USE
what is grand larceny?
LARCENY in which the VALUE of the goods taken is ABOVE a certain LEGALLY SPECIFIED AMOUNT
what is robbery?
the TAKING of PROPERTY of another from THEIR PERSON or IMMEDIATE PRESENCE, AGAINST their WILL, by VIOLENCE or INTIMIDATION
what is mugging?
another word for robbery an ASSAULT with the INTENT to ROB or STEAL (use of violence). usually someone being ‘shaken down’ for their money ex. in a dark alley
what is pick pocketing?
person who STEALS money, wallets, etc. from the POCKETS of people (in a CROWDED place). seen as the “art” of stealing from someone directly, without their knowledge
what is burglary?
BREAKING and ENTERING the dwelling, business, property, etc. of ANOTHER with the INTENT to STEAL (don’t actually have to ‘break’ ex. if the door is unlocked and you walk in). has a degree of assault to it, since you broke in
what is embezzlement?
to take MONEY GIVEN to you for LEGITIMATE REASONS and use it WITHOUT CONSENT for your OWN REASONS. ex. get money for investment but don’t put it into that
what is a pyramid scheme?
UNSUSTAINABLE ‘business model’ where participants are PROMISED PAYMENT for ENROLLING OTHERS into the ‘company’, rather than supplying any REAL SALE of product
what is fraud?
INTENTIONAL DECEIT or TRICKERY used for PROFIT (scams)
what is identity theft?
a form of STEALING someone’s IDENTITY by PRETENDING to be SOMEONE ELSE (by using their name)
what are the 4 types of identity theft?
CRIMINAL identity theft: POSING as another person when ARRESTED for a crime
FINANCIAL identity theft: using another persons identity to OBTAIN CREDIT, GOODS, and SERVICES
IDENTITY CLONING: using another persons identity to ASSUME their IDENTITY in DAILY LIFE
MEDICAL identity theft: using another persons identity to OBTAIN MEDICAL CARE or DRUGS
what is fencing?
RELOCATING and/ or SELLING of STOLEN GOODS, often by a 3RD PARTY who works with other criminals or by a PROCURER who arranged the original theft. the “fence” SEPARATES the STEALER from the SELLER
what is laundering?
MOVING MONEY obtained ILLEGALLY through LEGITIMATE BUSINESS to make it seem like the money is from LEGAL BUSINESS PROFIT. “cleaning” the money ex. purchasing property or art
