The dug their own trenches in order to stand their ground. In the end neither side could gain more than a few miles.

- German army crossed the Belgian border (August 3rd, 1914)
- British and France declared war on Germany (August 4th, 1914)
- The battle of Marne (4th - 10th September) stopped Germans from marching on Paris.
- To avoid losing already gained territory, the Germans dug trenches.

What main significant events took place at Gallipoli?
A
- Allied commanders decided to try to attack Germany by attacking her ally, Turkey.
- Allied soldiers, mainly from Australia and New Zealand, were sent to the peninsula while British ships tried to force a way through the Dardanelles.
- Entire mission was a failure.
- Allies lost more than 50,000 men but gained hardly any land.
