A

The dug their own trenches in order to stand their ground. In the end neither side could gain more than a few miles.

A
  • German army crossed the Belgian border (August 3rd, 1914)
  • British and France declared war on Germany (August 4th, 1914)
  • The battle of Marne (4th - 10th September) stopped Germans from marching on Paris.
  • To avoid losing already gained territory, the Germans dug trenches.

A
  • Allied commanders decided to try to attack Germany by attacking her ally, Turkey.
  • Allied soldiers, mainly from Australia and New Zealand, were sent to the peninsula while British ships tried to force a way through the Dardanelles.
  • Entire mission was a failure.
  • Allies lost more than 50,000 men but gained hardly any land.
