Ritual Theatre
Early form of theatre that used forms/techniques like sing, dance, characterization firmly rooted in religion
Western Drama
aka European Theatre, also called Aristotelian Theatre because it grew out of Aristotle. Passed from Athenians to Greeks to Romans to Europe to North America.
Non-Western Drama
All other forms of drama, from ritual theatre of Africa to traditional theatre of Asia.

Precolonial, Colonial, Postcolonial/total theatre
Sanskirt Drama
oldest form of indian language, tells storyies based on indian myth
Kathakal
Indian folk dance-drama based on Hindu poems Ramayanna and the mahabharata
Pear Garden
Chinese theatre, school of arts created by emperor ming in 714 CE
Peking Opera
Chinese theatre, synthesis of music, dance, acting, acrobatics. Uses stylized precise acting, painted face, military & civil plays
Bunraku
Japanese theatre, intricate puppet theatre, each puppet requires three operators
Noh theatre
Very intellectual highly sophisticated, performed in small square space. Japanese theatre. Involves deities, hero, women, insanity, and legends. Passed down from father to son.
