Artistic Director
Unifying lead on the artistic front for a space’s productions. Manages the artistic direction for a season of productions.
Production Manager
Unifying lead on the creative process front. Keeps the
production process running smoothly. Is in charge of scheduling, managing production meetings, and keeping departments on budget.
Director
Lead artistic vision on a particular production. Similar to an Artistic Director, but deals with a specific show instead of an entire season.
Stage Manager
Organizing force within the process of a production. Stage
Managers are in charge of keeping all departments up to date with current information, as well as making sure there is clear communication between said
departments. Usually calls the cues for a production.
Technical Director
Oversees the technical aspects of a production, which
includes the lighting, sound, stage prep, and set construction aspects. Oftentimes the Technical Director is also in charge of designing the plates (set blueprints) for
a set.
Shop Foreman
Works under Technical director to manage a shop for a setup or build. Shop Foremans are usually in charge of taking plates from the Technical Director and delegating work to the Scenic Crew
Scenic Crew
In charge of building set pieces, supports and takes direction from the shop foreman.
Run Crew
Works closely with stage manager backstage during rehearsals, techs, and runs. Usual jobs include fly system, costume changes, lightboard and soundboard running and any other activities that need to happen during the production.
Choreographer
This person is in charge of organizing and developing the
movement of Performing Artists on stage. Works closely with the show Director, Performing Artists, Musical Director, and Stage Manager.
Performing Artist
This is you! Working with the musical director/choreographer and director to display a particular vision to an audience. The face of the production.
Master electrician
In charge of all electrical and lighting elements for a
production. The most common role of the Master Electrician in dance theater is the hanging of the light plot.
Projectionist/ AV-IT
If there are videos that play on a projector, this person is in charge of making sure that the image is set up properly and sound associated with the image is synched up with it.
Costume Designer
This person is in charge of designing the costumes to be
worn in a production, and often also helps in the construction of said costumes.
This person is in charge of the musical aspects of a
production. Some of those aspects can include song choice, orchestras, choirs,
and bands. Works closely with Audio Engineers, Directors, and sometimes
Performing Artists.
Audio Engineer
In charge of designing and programming sound devices and speakers for a production.
