The World of the Tudors Flashcards
Henry V – The Conqueror of France
• He became King in 1413.
• Is known as one of the greatest kings of England.
• Went to war against France in 1513 as part of the
long-running Hundred Years’ War.
• His victory at the Battle of Agincourt led him to
the brink of victory against France.
• Was recognised as the heir to the French throne
in 1520 by Charles VI of France.
• Married Catherine de Valois, Charles VI’s daughter.
• Died in 1422 before being crowned King of France.
Henry VI – The Weak King
• The only child of Henry V.
• Became king before the age of 1 after the
sudden death of his father.
• After the end of the regency period in 1437,
he lost ground to France in the Hundred
Years’ War.
• Shy, quiet and contemplative, he was also
sometimes mentally unstable.
• His strong wife, Margaret of Anjou, clashed
with others in the kingdom including Richard,
Duke of York.
Edward IV – The Yorkist Usurper
• Civil war broke out in 1455 – the start of the
so-called ‘Wars of the Roses’.
• After the death of Richard, Duke of York,
Richard’s son Edward continued the fight.
• In 1461 Henry was deposed by Edward, who
became Edward IV, and imprisoned the
former king in 1465.
• Henry VI briefly was restored to the throne in
1470, before Edward returned and won back
the throne in 1471, this time having Henry
killed.
Edward V – The Prince in the Tower
• On the death of his father, Edward V became
king at the age of 12.
• The regent was his uncle, Richard, Duke of
Gloucester.
• Richard passed an Act called Titulus Regius,
which de-legitimised Edward IV’s sons, and
therefore became King Richard III.
• Edward V and his younger brother Richard
were taken to the Tower of London shortly
afterwards and never heard of again.
Richard III – The Loyal Traitor
• Unlike his brother George, Duke of Clarence,
Richard had been loyal to his other brother
King Edward IV while he was alive.
• On his death in 1483, though, Richard swiftly
acted to make himself king.
• Having got rid of his nearest rivals, he must
have thought himself fairly secure on the
throne, and he successfully defeated a
rebellion against him in 1483.
• However, in 1485, he met his match…
