The Working Memory Model Flashcards
Define the central executive
It monitors and coordinates all other mental functions in memory
Define the episodic buffer
It receives input from many sources, temporarily stores this information and then integrates it in order to construct a mental episode of what is being experienced
Define the phonological loop
It codes speech sounds in working memory, typically involving maintenance rehearsal (repeating words over and over again ‘loop’)
Define the visuo-spatial sketchpad
It codes information in terms of separate objects as well as the arrangement of these objects in ones visual field
What is the WMM?
An explanation of the memory used when working on a task.
Each store is qualitatively different
What 4 things make up the WMM?
Central executive
Episodic buffer
Phonological loop
Visuo-spatial sketch pad
Describe the central executive
Controls the 3 slave systems; Visuo spatial sketchpad, phonological loop, episodic buffer
Describes when/where attention is needed
Limited capacity
