The Working Memory Model Flashcards
What is the working memory model?
- explain short-term memory and divides into three components
Central executive , phonological loop, visuo-spatial sketchpad
What is the central executive?
-monitors incoming data and makes decisions about which two subsystems data should be allocated to
-Carries out attentional process of a memory system( focusing, dividing, switching attention to different stimuli)
-Doesn’t store info, directs info to relative subsystem
what is the phonological loop?
-Deals with auditory and language based information
-preserve order in which information arrives at the system and is subdivided into two modalities
-The phonological stores, storesis auditory info and gives you memory of sounds
The articulatory process allows for maintenance rehearsal in a loop
-articulatory process can hold two seconds of information by sub vocalising (mentally repeat things to yourself)
What is the visuo -spatial sketchpad?
-stored visual and spatial information, capacity of three to four objects
This subsystem is subdivided into two modalities , the visual cache and the inner scribe
-The visual cache - visual storage system retaining all data inputted visually
-Inner scribe - record arrangement of objects within visual field, allowing rehearsal of information
What is the episodic buffer?
-not part of original model and was added in 2000
-Temporary store that integrates the acoustic visual and spatial information
-maintains a sense of time sequencing, recording memories as episodes that are happening at the time
-Capacity-4 chunks of information
What is dual task performance?
-baddeley and hitch state that people can perform two tasks at the same time as long as those two tasks use different components of the working memory
-If the two tasks use the same component of the working memory, our cognitive processing will slow down and recalling will be impaired
