The Words of the Text Flashcards
The World of the Text (A picture - what is in the text)
The world of the text or the world within the text is like a picture. It shows us the text as it is and what is says now. For example, is the text a myth, parable, gospel, letter etc.
Things to consider:
- Who is the character - fictional or historical
- Where does the story take place
- Imagery
- Memorable scenes in the text
- Original language - how many times has it been translated before it got to English
The World in front of the Text (A mirror - how can you relate)
- A mirror the reader sees themselves in the text
- How can you relate to it today (modern)
- Stories written thousands of years ago
- How can it be relevant in the future
- The message can still remain
- What was the intent of the author?
How might gender, or culture, or life experience affect how the reader interprets or responds to the text
The World Behind the text (Door)
The world behind the text is like a door. We look to the past, to the time of the author who produced the text, and to the time when the text was written or set. The general approach is historical.
