What act was passed in 1948 and what impacts did it have?
The British Nationality Act was passed by the government meaning that all people in the British Empire (commonwealth) were British passport holders and were allowed to live and work in Britain. Many West Indians saw this as a great opportunity as Britain was short of workers such as transport system, hospitals and postal service

The Windrush was a ship which transported many Caribbean migrants to Britain
What was the general experience of migrants in Britain?
Many West Indians found that the colour of their skin provoked hostile reactions. Some others found good jobs but many found themselves in low-paying jobs such as cleaners, ticket collectors and hospital porters.
What happened in 1958?
In Nottingham and Notting Hill, there were several weeks of attacks when white youths attacked black youths on the streets and in their homes.
What was the purpose of Notting Hill Carnival?
It acted as a gesture of deffiance by the black community against the widespread racial attacks at the time and now attracts around 1 million visitors every year.
