Around 1948 many islands in the carribbean sea were part of the british empire, what were the main 3?
Jamaica, barbados and trinidad, (also known as the west indies for all the islands).
What did the west indies provide The brits?
10,000 men for britains army, navy and airforce.(they were very proud).
Why werent the west indie people happy to go back to there home in the 1940s?
Life was very hard in the Caribbean in the 1940s.
Why was life hard in the caribbeans?
Jamaica, was devastated by a hurricane in 1944, no tourist ondustry and price of sugar was at an all time low.
When did the British Nationality act happen?
In 1948 Parliament passed the British Nationality Act.
What did the British Nationality Act do?
Meant all the people of the empire is now called the commonwealth, where British passport holders were allowed to live and work in Britain
What did the British nationality act DO?
If you were in the empire you could go to britain and settle and work there.
Many west indians saw the British Nationality Act as a great opputunity. What jobs were they offered?
Running the postal service, hospitals and transport systems.
What troubling experiences did the immgrants recieve?
Extreme racism. Thing like, racist signs, prejudice behsviour and unfair conditions.
What happened in Nottingham and Notting Hill in 1958?
There were several weeks of violence with white youths atrack black youths ij the streets, at nightclubs, andin their homes
