They were eager to find a new life in Britain after facing hardships in their own

All people of the British empire were British passport holders and were allowed to live and work in Britain
Why did the Windrush generation find it hard to work in Britain
The jobs they were given did not represent their qualifications. They ended working in low paid jobs e.g. cleaners
What were some of the hardships the Windrush experienced
The quality of the housing they were given was very poor and they had no choice (given their situation) but to live in run-down areas
They experienced racist abuse

A famous speech about immigration which stated that if Britain did not control the flow of immigration, the native Britons would soon be outnumbered by the immigrants

People could only enter Britain from Commonwealth countries if they were skilled professionals who had been given permission to live and work in Britain

What was the Race Relations Act (1965)
Discrimination was illegal on the grounds of colour, race, ethnic, or national origins
What did the Race Relations Act lack
It only applied in public places such as hotels and restaurants and didn’t cover housing, employment or financial things such as mortgages and car insurance

Tighter restrictions than the Act of 1962 and required that you must show a ‘close connection’ with the UK

Made it illegal to refuse housing or employment to people because of their colour

In order to immigrate to Britain, you must have a parent or grandparent born in Britain
