A

• In 1948, he was accused by a communist journalist, Whittaker Chambers, of being a member of the Communist Party
• In January 1950, Hiss was convicted of perjury as he was accused of lying about passing info to the USSR during 1937-38
• Validity of this accusation is still widely debated

A

• Army-McCarthy hearings were held from April to June 1954 to investigate these claims
• A legal defence by army counsel Joseph N. Welch destroyed

• He said, ‘Senator… you have done enough. Have you no sense of decency, sir? At long last have you left no sense of decency?’
• In March 1955, the Senate censured McCarthy
• Censure - formal expression of severe disapproval
