the Wednesday Wars - September Flashcards
Why did Mrs. Sidman leave the school and what does she do now?
Doug Swieteck put Juicy Fruit gum and hair color in the water fountain, which ended up staining Mrs. Sidman’s face. She left to go to the “Main Administrative Office,” and the students see her when they go for recess on the playground.
Why does Mrs. Baker “hate” Holling?
According to Holling, because he doesn’t attend Catechism or Hebrew school on Wednesday afternoons; therefore, he will be staying with Mrs. Baker.
Is Holling successful in getting someone to feel sorry for him about being hated by Mrs. Baker?
No. Holling’s mom gives reasons why Mrs. Baker doesn’t hate Holling, and Dad is busy watching television, so he doesn’t want to be bothered. Holling’s sister agrees with Holling’s thinking that Mrs. Baker hates him, but she also tells him that in order for someone to “hate your guts,” Holling would need guts to begin with.
Holling likes to read, and he mentions several books that he enjoys. Which character from Treasure Island does Holling relate to and why?
Jim Hawkins, because Israel Hands hates him, and wants to kill him. Holling says that Mrs. Baker is his version of Israel Hands.
What happens at recess?
Holling ends up tripping Doug Swieteck’s brother at soccer, who throws up on Mrs. Sidman. It is later announced that Swieteck is okay, but that he will have to stay out of school for ten days observation, and they are also in need of a new playground monitor.
How does Holling escape from class when he has to diagram a sentence?
He gets called down to the office to see the principal.
Based on his name and the fact that an announcement was made about him at school, who might Lieutenant Tybalt Baker be, and where is he going?
He’s either Mrs. Baker’s husband or son, and he’s going to war in Vietnam with the 101st Airborne division.
