The Water Cycle Flashcards
The movement of water in different forms through the environment.
water cycle or hydrologic cycle
In the water cycle, water undergoes processes such as:
evaporation, condensation, and precipitation
The changing of liquid water into water vapor
evaporation
Water enters the atmosphere through ________.
transpiration
This occurs when the leaves of plants give off extra water during food-making process.
Transpiration
The second stage in the water cycle where it is the changing of water vapor into liquid form.
condensation
This stage is where any form of water suspended in air that falls to the ground.
Precipitation
Different forms of precipitation:
- rain
-snow
-sleet - hail
- drizzle
precipitation in liquid form; the most common form of precipitation
rain
frozen form of precipitation; precipitation in solid form
snow
frozen of partly frozen raindrops
sleet
precipitation in the form of pellets of ice and hard snow
hail
light rain or droplets of water with a diameter of about 0.5 mm or less
drizzle
Condensed water vapor near the ground.
Fog
Moisture that condenses upon the surface of a cool body at night.
Dew
The term for ice crystals that form when vapor freezes directly into ice without going through the liquid state.
Frost
Methods of removing impurities from water:
- evaporation
- distillation
- decantation
- filtration
The changing of ice into water vapor without first melting.
Sublimation
Methods of Purifying Drinking Water:
- boiling
- chlorination
Water that is fit for drinking.
potable water
Involves allowing sediments to settle down, then pouring water above the sediments into another container.
Decantation
It is the separation of insoluble impurities with the use of a filter paper.
Filtration
It is the collecting of evaporated water, then allowing it to condense at a lower temperature.
distillation
