The Water Cycle Flashcards
Precipitation
Water that condenses in the atmosphere and falls to the Earth’s surface in liquid or solid form
Groundwater
Any water that comes from below the ground (from wells or aquifers)
Runoff
That portion of rainfall that runs into streams as surface water rather than being absorbed into groundwater or evaporating
Evaporation
water is returned to the atmosphere
Conversion of a liquid into a gas (vapor)
Transpiration
releases large amount of water in the air
The act or process of transpiring, or releasing water vapor, especially through the stomata of plant tissue or the pores of the skim
Water Cycle 1
The water that exists in the atmosphere is in a gaseous state, and when it condenses from the gaseous state to form a liquid or solid, it becomes dense enough to fall to the Earth because of the pull of gravity PRECIPITATION
Water Cycle 2
When precipitation falls onto the earth, it may infiltrate the surface and percolate through soil and rock until it reaches the ground table to become groundwater,
Reservoir for water cycle
Lakes and Oceans
In cold regions blocks of snow or ice
Water Cycle 2 alt
or it may travel across the land’s surface as runoff and enter a drainage system, such as a stream or river, which will eventually deposit into a body of water such a as a lake or ocean.
Water Cycle 3
Water is returned to the atmosphere from both the Earth’s surface and from living organisms in a process called evaporation. Animals respire and release water vapor and additional gasses into the atmosphere.
Water Cycle 4
In plants, the process of transpiration releases large amounts of water into the air.
