The Vocal Mechanism Flashcards
Battery that drives the entire speech and hearing mechanism is?
Nervous system
Energy source for vocal mechanism?
Respiration
What is respiration to a speech pathologist? Definition
The driving force for speech production and central to understanding swallowing; mechanical process to bring air in and out of the lungs.
The framework? like building a house..
Framework: Skelletal system
Insulation: muscles
wallas: membrane and lining
Appliances: lunges
Respiratory system is supported and protected by skeletal framework which includes?
Rib
Sternum
Vertebrae
Vertebral column makes up?
The aixs
The vertebra is the functional unit of the?
Vertebral column
Transverse process (on the sides)
Point of attachment for
Spinal cord ends at?
L1 AND L2
C1 Atlas holds?
The weight of the skull and located below the foramen magnum.
*Tiny body and traverse foramen for spinal nerves that come out of there.
C2 Axis
C2 articulates with C1
Has odontoid process to lock into C1. To give the neck some movement.
C3-C7
Enough movement but not too much movement at this point
-Large foramen still since the spinal cord still goes through it. You see smaller corpus.
Whiplash occurs where and due to what?
C3-C7 region
-forward hit followed by a counter action
How many Thoracic vertebrae exist and what are the points of attachment?
- 12 thoracic vertebrae
- Point of attachment of the vertebra to the ribs.
- Foramina still exists but decreases in size
How many Vertebrae exist in the Lumbar region? what are its point of attachment?
- 5 (L1-L5)
- Lost of muscular attachment
- It encounters a lot of stress when we do daily routine.
- More likely to have back injury to this areas
Cauda Equina Syndrome is?
- Anterior thigh numbness
- B&B dysfunction
- Not a true spinal cord injury its more the nerve.
- Lumbar puncture
How many vertebrae exist in the Sacral region? What is the point of attachment?
- 5 (S1-S5)
- Fused wedge
- transfer weight to hip and hip joints.
Coccygeal Vertebrae?
- Tailbone
- No nerve ending
Thoracic Cavity houses?
- Lung and heart
- 12 Pairs of ribs
The rib cage and their attachment?
12 TOTAL
- 1-10: attached by Cartilage to the sternum
- 11-12: Are floating (They don’t even attach indirectly)
Thoracic
Thoracic suspends posteriorly from the vertebral column and superiorly marked by the first rib and the clavicle. Inferiorly bound by the 12th rib. Laterally bound by the ribs and anteriorly by the sternum.
