- Drafted at the constitutional convention in Philly, pennsylvania 1787
- Came into force 1789

A
- constitution meeting of 13 original brit colonies
- Gathered to: unite them n make them stronger because they were only 13 colonies
- at same time, wanted to keep sovereignty within future states- federal system

- US made up of 50 states (was only 13)
- Trying to find way to be together but not lose sovereignty
- Federal system: central gov + central gov delegates powers to states
- This system is called VERTICAL separation of power (UK has HORIZONTOL)

Bill of rights
A
-Constitution was not providing/mentioning any protection to the rights of individuals + therefore adopted 10 amendments that refer to individual rights
eg right to speech, freedom of religion etc

A
- document is very old and remains same with few amendments
- supreme court judges have interpreted these to make them valid with current times
