The Urinary System Flashcards
Urination
The process of expelling urine from the bladder through the urethra to the outside of the body.
Renal Cortex
The outer region of the kidney, where filtration of blood and urine formation begin.
Renal Medulla
The inner region of the kidney, consisting of renal pyramids and renal columns, where urine is concentrated and collected before entering the renal pelvis.
Renal Pelvis
The funnel-shaped structure in the kidney that collects urine from the renal tubules and sends it to the ureter.
Fibrous Capsule
The tough, fibrous outer covering of the kidney that provides support and protection.
Renal Corpuscle
The structure in the kidney where blood filtration occurs, consisting of the glomerulus and Bowman’s capsule.
Glomerulus
A network of capillaries in the renal corpuscle where blood filtration takes place, forming the first step in urine formation.
Renal Tubules
Small tubes in the kidney where reabsorption, secretion, and concentration of urine occur.
Glomerular Filtration Rate (GFR)
The rate at which the kidneys filter blood, reflecting the efficiency of kidney function.
Urinalysis
Laboratory analysis of urine to evaluate its physical, chemical, and microscopic properties, often used to diagnose diseases and monitor health.
