Why is Rio a growing city ?
Economic activities in Rio attract migrants from many different places,including:Argentina & Bolivia ,Portugal because of the common languages , skilled workers from the USA & UK.

When an increasing percentage of a countries population comes to live in towns and cities

- electricity-60 of new powerings installed and new nuclear generator built
- healthcare-medical staff detect and treat 20 different diseases in peoples homes ,reducing infant mortality and increasing life expectancy

1) quality ,mobility. And employment prospects of the inhabitants of the favelas have improved
2) the project has been recognised as a model by the UN and been used in other Brazilian Cities
What were the failures of the Favela Bairro project?
1) The budget of US$1billiom may not cover every favela
2) residents lack the skila and resources to make repairs
3) rents rise in the improved favelas and the poorest inhabitans are even worse off.

~12% of Rio’s populatoom have no running water
~ has over 30% have no electricity
~around 50% have no sewage connections
How has urban growth affected health and education??
HEALTH: infant mortality rates as high as 50 per 1000. Waste cant be disposed of ,increasing the danger of diseasee.
EDUCATION: only half of all kids continue their education beyond the age of 14.
How has urban growth affected unemployment an crime ?
Unemployment is as high as 20%. Average incomes may be less than £75 a month.
Crime - high murder rate of 20 per 1000 people,in many favelas drug gangs can dominate

An urban area with a total population of more than ten million people
What factors affect urbanisation?
- rural to urban Migration(push and pull factors ) people migrate to towns and cities in hope for gaining a better standard of living
- natural increase:birthrate is higher and death rate is lower. Improvements to health care,particularly in urban areas of poorer countries.
