The Universe Flashcards
What is a star?
1.
a fixed luminous point in the night sky that is a large, remote incandescent body like the sun.
synonyms:
What is a light year?
The distance light travels in one year
What is a red giant?
A large reddish star late in its life cycle
What is a white dwarf?
A small, hot, dim star that is the leftover center of an old star
What is a supernova?
A gigantic explosion in which a massive star collapses and throws its outer layers into space, plural supernovae
What is a black Hole?
An object so massive and dense that not even light can escape its gravity
What is a cluster?
A group of star galaxies bound by gravity
What is interstellar matter?
The gas and dust located between the stars in the galaxy.
What is a quasar?
Radio sources, very luminous object that produces energy at a high rate that are thought to be the most distant objects in the universe.
What is a universe?
The sum of all space, matter, and energy that exists, that have existed in the past, and that will exist in the future.
What is a red shift?
An apparent shift towards longer wavelengths of light cause when an a luminous object moves away from the observer.
What is a blue shift?
An apparent shift towards shorter wavelengths of light caused when a luminous object moves towards the observer.
What is The Big Bang Theory?
The theory that all matter and energy in the universe was compressed into an extremely small volume that 10 to 20 billion years ago exploded and began expanding in all directions.
