The Universe Flashcards
How do we see stars?
Stars give out light.
How did early astronomers make observations of the positions of stars?
With the naked eye.
What did ancient astronomers using the naked eye discover and think?
The found that stars were further away from us than planets.
They thought that stars were fixed on a shell around the earth all at the same distances.
What could ancient astronomers also see using the naked eye?
Nebulae and the Milky Way.
What did Gailileo discover using a telescope?
That nebulae and the Milky Way were actually groups of stars. He also suggested that stars were other sins and were at different distances from the earth.
What do all planets orbit?
Stars
What do all moons orbit?
Planets
What is a galaxy?
A collection (group) of billions of stars held together by gravity.
What is our galaxy called?
The Milky Way.
What is the sun?
One of the billions of stars that make up our galaxy.
What do billions of galaxies make up?
The universe.
What are nebulae?
Clouds of gases in space.
Sometimes scientists think that they are seeing nebulae but they aren’t, what are they actually seeing?
Clusters of stars (galaxies)
What is a star?
A ball of gas.
Planets are closer to us than….
