Q

What is static strength?

A
  • where force is applied against a resistance, without any movement occurring
  • isometric contraction is also known as isometric strength
  • e.g. crucifix position on rings in gymnastics

Q

What is dynamic strength?

A
  • a force applied against a resistance, where muscles change length, eccentrically or concentrically
  • also known as power output
  • e.g. hop skip and jump phase of triple jump.

Q

What is maximum strength?

A
  • the ability to produce a maximum amount of force in a single muscular contraction
  • also known as 1 rep max
  • e.g. an Olympic deadlift

Q

What is explosive strength?

A
  • The ability to produce a maximal amount of force in one or a series of rapid muscular contractions
  • also known as elastic strength due to the stretch reflex mechanism within the muscle
  • e.g. sprint start, long/high jump

Q

What is strength endurance?

A
  • the ability to sustain repeated, muscular contractions over a period of time, withstanding fatigue
  • e.g. rowing, swimming
