November 1974 - Birmingham pub bomb kills 19
October 1976 - Republican prisoners seek status as political prisoners through blanket protest
1978 - Blanket protest escalates to ‘dirty protest’ by 250 Republican prisoners seeking political status
March 1979 -Airey Neave, the conservative spokesman on Northern Ireland is killed by an IRA car bomb in the House of Commons car park

Why and when did the Sunningdale Agreement fail?

A

28th May 1974. As well as political parties mentioned in the Heath section unions were also against the agreement. The Ulster Workers Council went on strike which crippled power leading to a state of emergency being declared. After this Wilson imposed direct rule from Westminster.

What did Wilson do to try and ease the Troubles? - was it successful?

A

He created the Northern Irish Constitution Convention which would determine the future of the country through an elected body. However this body was dominated by Unionists so it collapsed in 1976.
