What act brought in the Tripartite System?
The 1944 Education Act
Why was it called the Tripartite System?
a. Because the children were selected and allocated into one of three schools:
1. Grammar school
- Offered an academic curriculum, access to non-manual jobs and higher education
- For pupils with academic ability who passed the 11+
2. Secondary Modern schools
- Non-academic ‘practical’ curriculum, access to manual work
- For pupils that failed the 11+
3. Technical schools
- These schools only existed in a few areas
How did the Tripartite System reproduce class and gender inequality?
a. It channelled the 2 social classes into 2 different types of school that offered unequal opportunities
b. Girls also had to gain higher marks to get a place
