The kingdom of Ghana was a wealthy empire that spread across an area the size of Western Europe.

The Songhai kingdom grew powerful and successful, It had a well structured system of a government, a developed currency and imported cloth from Europe.

What happened when Europeans arrived to look for labourers?
The Africans changed. They now captured slaves and sold them for profit. The Africans became wealthy and powerful and the Africans did not trust eachother.
What manual work did the slaves do?
Farming, mining and household tasks.
Where and what did the slaves do in other parts of Africa?
In Mali and Songhai slaves where used as Administrators and soldiers.
Why did the atlantic slave trade begin?
Because the Portugese became very wealthy and other European countries noticed the wealthy and decided to join the slave trade.

Tobacco, Sugar Cane and Cotton

The demand for slaves increased. To keep costs down, slaves work on these plantations.
