A system of beliefs, especially one rooted in epistemic ideas rather than practical use
Ideology
A term to describe bodies whose sex organs and/or chromosomes lie outside of what can be easily categorized as “male” or “female”
Intersex

Suffrage
A political alliance that strives for combined action
Coalition
Belief in a set of intrinsically different categories that everyone must fall into with little room for nuance, can be applied to many things such as gender and sexual identities
Essentialism
A label used for people who don’t experience any sense of gender identity
Agender
Everyone getting the same treatment no matter their background
Equality
The ways in which biological sex characteristics affect our sociocultural experience, and the categories we are placed into based on biological sex

Sexism
A person whose gender identity lines up with their biological sex assigned at birth
Cisgender
Abbreviations used to describe one’s sex assigned at birth (male or female)
AMAB/AFAB
A person whose gender identity is different from their biological sex assigned at birth; often entails a progress of changing social gender expression and/or biological sex organs
Transgender
The behaviors expected of each gender as dictated by mainstream cultural norms
Gender role
A term coined by Alice Walker to describe a belief adjacent to feminism that is more focused on feminine joy and self-love as well as being open to Black women and other women of color
Womanist
The cultural attributes expected of men; in Western society, these include strength, leadership, and assertiveness among others
Masculinity
An idea that originated in second-wave feminism arguing that people’s status as part of an oppressed group changes the way they see the world and that their perspectives are necessary to include in the creation of knowledge
Standpoint theory
The belief that certain societal distinctions are made not based on empirical observations of reality, but are shaped by the social contexts in which they exist
Social constructionism
A political tactic in which marginalized identity groups ally together under shared identity attributes in order to represent themselves
Strategic essentialism
A person’s right to have control over their reproductive organs, often referring to abortion rights but also includes birth control, sterilization, etc
Reproductive rights
Biological reproductive organs and secondary characteristics, as defined and categorized by cultural norms
Sex
A person’s experience with sexual feelings and acts, especially in terms of sexual orientation
Sexuality
A cultural focus on the experiences of men, often at the expense of acknowledgement of women’s experiences
Androcentrism
Social organizations that give the majority of power and resources to men; frames women and children as dependent and subordinate
Patriarchy
Specific prejudice against transgender women
Transmisogyny
The first major women’s rights convention in the US where the Declaration of Sentiments was written and signed. Held in 1848
Seneca Falls Convention
The idea that the social categories we belong to (ie race, gender, sexuality, etc) affect our life experience in overlapping ways
Intersectionality
Specific prejudice against Black women
Misogynoir
Human relationships defined by mutual obligation and care for one another; often associated with blood ties but occurs outside of that as well
Kinship
An alternative spelling of the word “woman” popularized to avoid the suffix “-man”; associated with lesbian separatists and trans-exclusionary feminists
Womyn
Any given person’s politics will be affected by their demographics; people will fight more radically for their own rights than for someone else’s
Identity politics
Perceived prejudice against men
Misandry
The medical term for the discomfort experienced by trans people when they present as their gender assigned at birth
Gender dysphoria
A form of activism that aims to raise public awareness of a chosen social/political issue
Consciousness-raising
A belief among often white, often lesbian second-wave feminists that the patriarchy could be defeated by the total separation of women from men altogether
Separatism
A label for someone who doesn’t experience any sexual attraction towards anyone
Asexual
A term used to describe anyone who categorizes themselves as outside of the dichotomy of “man” and “woman”
Non-binary
A document written in 1848 by Elizabeth Cady Stanton and signed by 100 attendees of the Seneca Falls Convention arguing for women’s rights
Declaration of Sentiments
A label for experiencing sexual attraction to people regardless of gender
Pansexual
Fair treatment; everyone getting what they need. Recognizes that not everyone starts from the same place or has the same needs.
Equity
A person whose gender identity changes over time
Genderfluid
19th-century belief in women as inherently pure and defenseless, in need of protection from men
Cult of True Womanhood
A US Constitutional Amendment that, if ratified, would ban legal discrimination on the basis of sex. It was approved by the House in 1971 and the Senate in 1972 but has not been ratified by enough states to become law.
Equal Rights Amendment
The patriarchal belief that heterosexuality is the default orientation that everyone experiences and should strive towards
Heteronormativity
Ratified in 1920, the US Constitutional Amendment that gave women the right to vote
Nineteenth Amendment
The theory of knowledge; a field dedicated to how we know what we know and how that can be improved
Epistemology
Prejudice against women
Misogyny
The field of study that examines the experiences of women and other marginalized groups in society; grew from the institutionalization of activism into the academy during/after the second wave
WGS/WGSS
The unfair difference between men’s and women’s opportunities, pay, etc
Gender gap
The inherent knowledge we have of our own life experience that others do not possess
Epistemic privilege
A word that originated as a slur for the LGBTQ+ community; has evolved over time to refer to a political position in opposition to heteronormantivity and, more recently, an umbrella term for anyone who identifies as non-cisgender or heterosexual
Queer
The essentialist take that the only two possible gender identities are male and female and everyone should belong to one of them
Gender binary
An umbrella term to describe Indigenous American labels for gender identities outside of the binary
Two-spirit
The 19th-century idea that men belong in the “public sphere” (going to work, political participation, etc) and women belong in the “private sphere” (housework, child rearing, etc)
Separate Spheres Ideology
A label for experiencing attraction towards 2 or more genders
Bisexual
A social movement that advocates for the liberation of women and other marginalized groups from the patriarchy and mainstream societal oppression
