        • Gonzalo ‘reads’ Boatswain’s face and decides he is not destined to die by drowning, but rather by hanging
        • imagery “the rope of his (Boatswain’s) destiny”
    • religious: when he believes it is his final moment, he calls on God’s mercy in prayer
      • “The king and prince at prayers! Let’s assist them, / For our case is as theirs”
