The TECHNICAL Flashcards
What is the goal of setting white balance?
To make your whites look white.
What unit of measurement is used to measure the color temperature of all light sources?
Kelvin - The scale goes from 1,000k - 10,000k
What is the temperature of the sun at noon-day?
5,600k
What temperature are most sunsets and incandescent light bulbs?
2,500-3,500 - This doesn’t mean we would want to white balance at this temperature however. Doing so would make things far to blue.
What temperature are most twilights or blue hour?
8,000k-10,000k
Do you always want to have perfect white balance?
No, are eyes don’t always see perfect whites and the director may want to have the white balance off to help convey a certain emotion or match what are eyes would realistically see (making things more orange for example during sunset).
What is a general rule of thumb for determining what your white balance setting should be?
The setting that conveys what your eyes are seeing in that moment. Unless you want to cheat the image to make a shot look more like sunset for example by making it more orange.
If you want your shot to be more blue, do you set the white balance to a higher or lower number?
Lower
If you want your shot to be more orange, do you set the white balance to a higher or lower number?
Higher
For shots in the shade, what should your white balance be roughly?
7000k
For shots in daylight during mid-day what should your white-balance be roughly?
5600k
For shots in tungsten light what should your white-balance be roughly?
3200k
For Florescent lighting, what should your white-balance be roughly?
4000k
What should your white-balance be when you have two different color temperatures of light like daylight and stung?
Try and split the difference, remove one source, replace once source, remove and replace all sources, or a combination of these options.
Is there another way to effect the color of your image besides white-balance?
Yes, adjusting your tint or color profile settings.
