Chaotic and Inefficient
Tax Farming

The main taxes imposed and main group effected

5% Tax on income- Third Estate
Poll tax (Tax on People)- Third and second estate
Salt Tax - all
Food and Drink Tax - all
Goods entering a town tax- all
Direct Tax System
Officials (Who purchased their position) would collect taxes leading to corruption as they couldn’t be dismissed and there was no entity keeping them in check
Consequences of the Tax System
- The vast corruption (leading to lack of money collected) due to the inability to dismiss Officials and lack of accountability
- Tax-Farming meant not all money entered the Government
- Third Estate took the brunt of all taxation
Evaluation of the Taxation System
1.The system of exemption and corruption led to a inadequate income to fund wars (7 year war and American revolution)
2. Created resentment among the Third Estate
