Q

What are 3 key examples of dramatic methods in the induction?

A
  • The Lord’s long speeches show that he has ultimate control and power over, not only Sly, but everyone else with him, too, as if he is the director of the play.
  • The induction acts as a structural framing device that sets up some of the key themes of the play (eg. class, power dynamic and deception).
  • A lot of hunting and transformation imagery and language is used to foreshadow Petruchio’s taming of Katherina.

Q

What are 3 key examples of dramatic methods in Act 2?

A
  • Physical comedy of Katherina pulling Bianca around and Hortensio having a lute broken over his head.
  • Repartee, word play and quick wit between Katherina and Petruchio as they argue - Katherina’s words are sincere and Petruchio’s are more light-hearted.
  • Petruchio begins to dominate through the use of his long speeches, showing that he has already begun to tame Katherina. His last words to her are a long speech, showing he has complete authority over her.
