The Sturcture And Fucntion Of Neurones Flashcards
What are neurones ?
Neurones are cells that are specialised to carry neural information throughout the body.
Name the 3 types of neurones?
- sensory
- relay
- motor
What do neurones typically consist of ?
1 cell body
Dendrites
Axon
What are the functions of dendrites at one end of the neurone?
Dendrites at one end of the neurone receive signals from other NEURONE or from SENSORY RECEPTORS.
What are dendrites connected to?
Dendrites are connected to the cell body
What is the function of the cell body?
The cell body is the control centre of the neurone.
Where does an impulse get carried to from the cell body?
The impulse is carried from the cell body along the axon.
Where does the impulse terminate ?
The impulse terminates at the axon terminal
What is found around many nerves including ones in the brain and spinal chord?
Along many nerves including ones in the brain and spinal chord there is an insulating layer that forms around the axon. This insulating layer is known as the MYELIN SHEATH
Why is there an insulating layer around most of the nerves?
The myelin sheath allows nerve impulses to be transmitted much more rapidly along the axon.
What happens if the myelin sheath is damaged?
- impulses slow down
What is the range of the length of a neurone?
A neurone can vary from a few millimetres up to one metre
