The Study of Chemistry Flashcards
What is chemistry?
The study of matter, its properties, and the changes matter undergoes.
What is matter?
Anything that takes of space and has mass.
What is a property?
Any characteristic that allows us to recognize a particular type of matter and to distinguish it from other types.
What are some samples of matter?
A pen, a body, air, a phone.
What is matter composed of?
Elements.
How many elements are there?
118.
What are atoms?
The almost infinitesimally small building blocks of matter.
What are the properties of matter?
The composition and structure of matter.
What is the composition of matter?
The kind of atoms the matter contains.
What is the structure of matter?
The arrangement of the atoms the matter contains.
What are molecules?
Two or more atoms joined in a specific shape.
What can minor difference of the composition or structure of matter cause?
Differences in properties.
How many oxygen atoms does ethanol have?
1 oxygen.
How many oxygen atoms does ethylene glycol have?
2 oxygen atoms.
Why are Ethanol and ethylene glycol very different but both contain oxygen atoms?
Ethanol is alcohol and is non toxic while ethylene glycol is automobile antifreeze and is very toxic.
