The Structure of The Brain Flashcards
Where is the hindbrain?
the upper part of the spinal cord, brain stem, and cerebrum
What does the hindbrain do?
controls the body’s vital functions (respiration, heart rate)
What does the cerebellum do?
coordinates movement and is involved with learned movements such as playing piano or hitting a tennis ball
Where is the cerebellum?
the back/base of the brain
Where is the midbrain?
the uppermost part of the brainstem
What does the midbrain do?
controls some reflex actions and is part of the circuit involved in controlled eye movements and other voluntary movements
Where is the forebrain?
made up of the cerebrum and structures beneath it. (thalamus, hypothalamus, pituitary gland, limbic system, and the olfactory bulb)
Where is the cerebrum?
the topmost part of the brain
What does the cerebrum do?
source of intellectual activities and lets you recognize friends, read books, and play games
What separates the cerebrum?
a deep fissure
What do each of the hemispheres of the cerebrum do?
Left: ability to form words
Right: abstract reasoning skills
What happens to signals from the brain/body?
They cross over. So, the right hemisphere controls the left side of the body and the left hemisphere controls the right side of the body. (when one side of the brain is damaged, the other side of the body is affected)
Where is the cerebral cortex?
it coats the cerebrum and cerebellum (abt 2.5mm thick)
What does the cerebral cortex do?
most information processing
What is another name for the cerebral cortex? Why is it named that?
also called “gray matter” because nerves in the area lack the insulation that makes other areas of the brain appear to be white
