Q

Discuss the key points of Abraham’s story explaining how it lead to the Palestinian and Israeli conflict.

A
  1. God tells Abraham and Sarah, who are childless, to leave Ur and travel to a new land.
  2. God promises if they do this they will have a son and he will inherit a great land.
  3. They travel a long way, but they have no son. Abraham has a son with his wife’s servant. The son is called Ishmael.
  4. Sarah and Abraham are met by messengers of God who say that Sarah will have her own son despite being 90 years old.
  5. Sarah has a son called Isaac.
  6. Sarah tells the servant and the illegitimate son Ishmael to leave their home as they no longer need him and he is a bad influence on Isaac.
  7. God makes Abraham prove he is a good servant to him by expelling Ishmael on his orders when Sarah wants him gone and also to be willing to sacrifice his natural son, Isaac.
  8. Ishmael and Isaac as direct descendants of Abraham could legitimately own the land.
  9. The Israeli Jews believe all the land should belong to them as Isaac was the rightful heir, but Palestinian Arabs believe Ishmael was the first born son and so he is the rightful heir to all the land.
  10. It has not been possible to find a solution.

God told him to do so and so he did.

40

3 figures appear, father, son and Holy Spirit. The Holy Trinity.

Abraham was 100 years old and Sarah was 90 years old.

Both were far too old to have a baby and Isaac was a gift from God

61
Q

Why is the Isaac relevant for Sarah’s son?

A

Sarah laughed when she was told she was going to have a son and so this is why calling the son ‘laughter’ is relevant.

62
Q

After Sarah gives birth to Isaac what does she ask if Hagar and a Ishmal?

A

She tells them to go away

63
Q

Why do you think Sarah tells a Ishmal and Sarah to go, given that Ishmal was Abraham’s son?

A

Sarah no longer needed or wanted Ishmal as he was a child borne of her husband and the slave girl, Hagar.
She was probably a bit jealous of them.

Also she thought Ishmal was wicked and a bad influence on their natural son, Isaac.

Q

Why is Isaac a paradox?

A

God gives Issac to Sarah and Abraham and then they are asked to sacrifice him to God.

70
Q

Why do you think God uses the killing of Isaac to test Abraham’s faith?

A

Isaac is Abraham’s most precious possession, his longed for son. If Abraham is willing to sacrifice him for a God then he is true believer and worshipper and totally devoted to God.

A

Abraham lifts his knife and is about to bring it down on his son.

77
Q

Why was Isaac no longer required to be sacrificed for God?

God wanted to be sure that Abraham had the faith and belief in God to give him up. God knew that Abraham intended to kill Isaac food God and so God knew he was his true servant.

78
Q

Does Abraham slaughter his son?

A

No. Just as Abraham is about to kill Isaac with his knife, God tells him that Isaac is not required and that Abraham has proved himself.

79
Q

Internationally and locally, people link the stories of Abraham, Ishmal and Isaac to the troubles in the Middle East between the Israelis and the Palestinians. Why is this?

A

The Palestine’s believe that as the elder son, Ishmal should have been in charge of the land.
