What happened in January 1919?
Workers were protesting throughout Germany. The Sparacists tried to turn this into a revolution.
When they were in Berlin, what did they do?
Took over the governments newspaper and telegraph headquarters, hoping protesters would join them and take over the buildings, but this did not happen.
What happened when the government ordered the army?
They stopped the uprising and were helped by units of the Freikorps.
Who were the Freikorps?
Units made up of ex-soldiers who were anti-Communist.

What happened to Rosa luxemburg?
Was captured by the Freikorps and shot, her body was dumped in the Berlin Canal.
What happened to Karl Liebknecht?
Was murdered.
Was the Spartacist successful?
No it was badly planned and they had no support from other left wing groups. Without their main leaders they were defeated.
