- largest and wealthiest English colony,had the first elected government
- in 1607 became the first permanent colony
- colonists first came to look for gold but many started plantations

- began in 1632 when King Charles I of England gave land to Cecilius Calvert (known as lord Baltimore)
- Calvert hope to make Maryland a refuge for Catholics
- in 1649 Maryland government passed the toleration act it was the first law in North America to promise all Christians worship freely

A
- in the late 1600s England ,France and Spain all claimed land south of Virginia
- King Charles the second wanted to start another colony on this land and he formed a new colony called Carolina
- The city of Charlestown later called Charlston grew large and wealthy
- The southern part of the Colony had good farmland and excellent harbors the north did not and grow more slowly
- in 1729 Carolina became to colonies North and South Carolina

- in 1732 King George the second started another colony to keep the Spanish and French away from South Carolina
- The land was given to James Oglethorpe in English lawmaker and army officer
- The new colony was named Georgia in honor of King George
- Oglethorpe want Georgia to be a place for poor people and Debtors
- Georgian colonist could not drink alcohol could not own slaves or elect their own legislature

Cash crops
A
- in Virginia and Maryland tobacco was the main cash crop
- Rice was important food for southern farmers who learned to grow it from African workers
- indigo was a plant that can be made into a dark blue dye
- Eliza Lucas Pinckney developed a type of indigo that was much easier to grow
