The Solar System Flashcards
Planet
Any of the primary bodies that orbit the sun
Solar System
Is the sun and all the objects that orbit it
Satellite
Is an object in orbit around a body that has a large mass
Phase
A position of the Earth and the Moon
Eclipse
When the Earth and the sun and the Moon are in a straight line
Terrestrial Planet
A planet with rocks mountains valleys and rough surfaces
Hydrosphere
All of the water on the earths surface and clouds
Asteroid
A small rocky body in space
Gas giant
Farthest from the sun all have gas on the planet
Nebula
A cloud of dust made from hydrogen, helium and other gases
Star
Are huge spheres of very hot gases that emit light and other radiation
Light year
An for distance light travels
Red giant
The suns outer core temperature will rise and the sun becomes a red giant
White dwarf
A small very dense star about the size of Earth
Supernova
Huge bright explosion called Type 11
Black whole
Consist of matter so massive and compressed that nothing not even light can escape
Nebula
Dust cloud of gases like helium and hydrogen
Galaxy
Collection of millions of billions of stars
Cluster
Galaxy’s bound together by gravity
Interstellar matter
Clouds of interstellar matter provide materials that allow new stars to form
Quasar
A quasi-stellar object, named for its starlike appearance
Superclusters
When billion of thousands of stars come together to form
Universe
All space mater and energy that exists
Red shift
Shifted toward the red end of the spectrum
Blue shift
When an object is approaching us the shift is toward shorter wavelength at the spectrum blue end
The Big Bang Theory
The universe began with gigantic explosions 10 billion to 20 Billion years old
