The Social Learning Theory Flashcards
What is the social learning theory?
-suggests learning occurs through both directly classical and operant conditioning and indirectly through vicarious reinforcement
What is vicarious reinforcement?
-more likely to imitate some people of they are rewarded for it
What is identification?
-more likely to initiate modes who are like us
What is imitation?
-copying the behaviour of others
-only occurs if the behaviour is seen to be rewarded
Stages of SLT
- Observer identifies themselves with desirable role model
- Displays specific behaviour - imitated by observer
- If role model is variously reinforced = increases imitation
What are meditational processes?
-cognitive processes which intervene between stimulus + response
What are the 4 meditational processes?
-attention, retention, motor reproduction and motivation
-ARMM
What was Bandura’s bobo doll used for?
-36 boys + girls - 3-6yrs old
-3 groups; real life agressive models, aggressive acts on film and agressive cartoon character
Findings of Bobo doll
-agressive role model = agressive towards bobo than non agressive group
Real world application of Bobo Doll
-explains cultural differences in behaviour
-how children learn, media, cultural norms and how children come to understand their gender role
Assumptions of the SLT
-Bandura agreed with behaviourists - learning from experience
-however he proposed that people learn through observation and imitation of others
Evaluation of Bobo Dolls - lab studies
-in a lab - contrived nature = may respond to DC
-doll - purpose to strike it - children behaved in an expected way
-suggests that research may tell us little about how children learn aggression in everyday life
