The Skin Flashcards
List the functions of skin and their importance in health
Protection: relatively waterproof, acts as a barrier against microorganism, physical agents e.g. ultra violet, chemicals and dehydration
Regulation of body temp: maintain constant temp to prevent cell death
Formation of vitamin d: maintenance of bone
Excretion of oil and sweat: e.g. urea when kidney function is impaired
Absorption: e.g. drugs and toxic chemicals
Cutaneous sensation: sensory receipts can be sensitive to touch, pressure, temperature or pain
Explain the changes in skin from preterm to old age
From the third decade there are gradual changes in the structure and function of the skin, which become prominent with age
As the basal layer becomes less active, the epidermis thins. The dermis also thins are there are fewer elastic and collagen fibres, causing wrinkling and sagging
Production of vitamin D decreases
