What are the two types of connective tissue in the skeleton?
Bone and cartilage
What are the 4 main functions of bone?
Protect major organs, mechanical basis of movement, haematopoiesis in bone marrow, storage of salts.
What are the two types of mature bones?
compact and spongy
Describe compact bone
strong and dense. all bones have a superficial layer of it
Describe spongy bone
less dense, numerous air spaces, forms the core of most bones
What are the three types of cartilage?
Hyaline, fibrous and elastic
What is the axial skeleton?
skull, vertebral column and thoracic cage. These are the bones along the body’s long axis.
What is the appendicular skeleton?
The bones that articulate from the axial skeleton.
What is osteoporosis?
decrease in bone mass and strength with no change in calcified to uncalcified ratio.
What disease does cause change in ratio?
Osteomalacia
