Q

Briefly describe the five functions of our bones

A
  1. Support
    - leg bones support our trunk
    - rib cage supports thoracic wall
  2. Protection
    - the skull protects the brain
    - the rib cage protects the organs in thoracic cavity
  3. Movement
    - muscles, attached to bones by tendons, use bones as levers to move the body
  4. Storage
    - fat is stored in marrow
    - calcium and phosphorus
  5. Blood cell formation

A
  • bone breaks incompletely, like the way a green twig breaks

- common in children because their bones are more flexible than adults

Q

Briefly describe the four functions of our muscles

A
  1. Movement
    - muscles, attached to bones by tendons, contract to move the body
    - facial expressions, locomotion, peristalsis, etc
  2. Stability
    - maintains posture against gravity
    - stabilizes joints
  3. Generates heat
    - ATP powers muscle contraction, energy is lost as heat
  4. Additional functions
    - protects organs
    - regulates the passage of substances (dilate/constrict)
