The Skeletal System- Quiz Flashcards
Briefly describe the five functions of our bones
- Support
- leg bones support our trunk
- rib cage supports thoracic wall - Protection
- the skull protects the brain
- the rib cage protects the organs in thoracic cavity - Movement
- muscles, attached to bones by tendons, use bones as levers to move the body - Storage
- fat is stored in marrow
- calcium and phosphorus - Blood cell formation
Depressed fracture
- broken bone portion is pressed inward
- this is typical of a skill fracture
Compression fracture
- bone is crushed
- colon in porous bones (osteoporotic bones of old people)
Spiral
- ragged team occurs when excessive twisting forces are applied to bone
- common in sports
Impacted fracture
- broken bone ends are forced into each other
- occurs when a person tries to break a fall with straight arms
Greenstick fracture
- bone breaks incompletely, like the way a green twig breaks
- common in children because their bones are more flexible than adults
Comminuted fracture
- bone breaks into many fragments
- common in older people with brittle bones
Four properties of muscle cells
- excitability (responsive)
- contractibility (shorten forcibly)
- extensibility (stretch)
- elasticity (return to rest)
Briefly describe the four functions of our muscles
- Movement
- muscles, attached to bones by tendons, contract to move the body
- facial expressions, locomotion, peristalsis, etc - Stability
- maintains posture against gravity
- stabilizes joints - Generates heat
- ATP powers muscle contraction, energy is lost as heat - Additional functions
- protects organs
- regulates the passage of substances (dilate/constrict)
