The Skeletal System Flashcards
Joints
Where bone meets bone
Bones are cushioned by cartilage, fluid and membranes
-Moveable/synovial joints
-Immovable/fused joints
Immovable joint
Fused joint
Skull, pelvis
Muscles
Made of protein, tough, elastic tissues
Contracts To cause movement
Tendons
Connect muscle to bone
Functions of skeleton
- support the body
- allow movement
- protect internal structures on body
- bone marrow produces red, white blood cells and platelets
Biceps and triceps
Biceps contract(agonist) , triceps relaxes(antagonist) when arm moves upwards.
Ligaments
Connects bone to bone
Antagonistic muscles
Pairs of muscles that work against each other.
Types of joints
Fused: skull
Synovial (ball and socket, hinged)
Ball and socket: hip and shoulder
Hinged: elbow and knee
Synovial Fluid
Cushions and lubricate the joint
Shock absorber
Bones
A living tissue which contains cells, blood vessels and nerves.
Adults have 206
Antagonistic muscles
Pairs of muscles that work against each other
Biceps and triceps in the upper arm
Synovial joints
-Ball and socket
-Hinged
Contains lubricating liquid called synovial fluid
Consists of cartilage, ligaments, synovial fluid
Cartilage
A dense connective tissue at the top of the bone
Synovial fluid
A thick, straw-coloured substance used to cushion and lubricate the joint, acts as a shock absorber
