The Skeletal System Flashcards
The head end
Cranial
(Cephalic)
The tail end or for humans our feet (part away from the head )
Caudal
The belly side , the whole belly
Ventral
The back side, rear side of the body
Dorsal
Above
Superior
The lower portion or that of which is below
Inferior
Descriptive prefix meaning above
Supra
Descriptive prefix meaning below
Infra
The forward surface or toward the front
For example our kneecap is in the front portion of our body)
Anterior
The rear surface or toward the rear
For example, our shoulder blade is located on the back of our surface
Posterior
Location near the midline than another location
(Center)
Medial
To a location farther from the midline than another location
(Far from middle)
Lateral
Nearer the main axis of the body, near the point of attachment
Proximal
Away from the main axis of body, or near the point of attachment
Distal
At or near the surface
Superficial
Away from the surface
For example, your ribs are ___ to your skin
Deep
A plane that split the body horizontally that gives us a upper and lower portion of the body
Transverse (Horizontal)
Plane that divides the body vertically giving a right and left portion
Sagittal
A plane that is sagittal (giving a left and right portion of the body) in equal amount to both sides , directly in the middle
Midsagittal
A plane that splits the body in the middle of the skull vertically giving Ventral position and Dorsal
Frontal (coronal) Plane
A deep pit or socket in the maxillae or mandible , the area that ur gum lays on near your teeth
Alveolus
The junction of two bones
Articulation
Ear-shaped (Outer ear)
Auricular
Cleft into 2 parts or branches (divided into 2 equal lobes by a median cleft)
Bifid
A little head looking part of a bone (knee caps have capitulum)
Capitulum
A spiral structure like a sea shell (nasal, ear ones too)
Concha
A large, smooth, rounded articulating oval structure (large convex projection that usually contacts another bone)
Condyle
Describing a projection shaped like a crow’s beak
Coracoid
Describing a triangular projection shaped ending in a sharp point
Coronoid
Associated with or a part of ribs (central parts of the ribs)
Costal
A narrow, prominent ridge like projection (roundish top of our pelvis)
Crest
Perforated like a sieve
Cribriform
Wedge-shaped (bones located on mid foot )
Cuneiform
Half of a facet, part of an articular surface shared by 2 adjacent bones
Demifacet
The middle portion of a long bone, the shaft
Diaphysis
An elevation or projection, especially on a bone
Eminence
A projection adjacent to a condyle, served as place of attachment
Epicondyle
The end of a long bone
Epiphysis
Small pit or depression
Fovea
Flattened or shallow depression
Fossa
rounded passageway through the bone
Foremen
Small, thin, shallow articulating surface
Facet
Narrow, slit-like opening through the bone
Fissure
A gap
Hiatus
Shaped like a shallow socket
Glenoid
Prominent, rounded epiphysis
Head
Thin, flat plate
Lamina
Low ridge, less prominent than a crest
Line
Hammer shaped process
Malleolus
Breast-shaped
Mastoid
Constricted portion adjacent to a head
Neck
Passageway through a bone
Meatus
An indentation or V-shaped depression
Notch
Associated with the nape of the neck
Nuchal
Supporting column or stalk
Pedicle
Like a rock
Petrous
Projection : bony prominence
Process
High place
Premontory
Wing like
Pterygoid
An angular extension of a bone relative to the rest of the structure; a branch
Ramus
A partition
Septum
A cavity or hallow space in a bone
Sinus
Pointed, slender process
Spine
Flat, scale-like
Squamous
Pointed, pen-like
Styloid
Narrow groove
Sulcus
Line of union in an immovable articulation
Suture
Massive, rough projection found only on the femur
Trochanter
Smooth, grooved pulley-like articulation
Trochlea
Small rounded projection
Tubercle
Large rough projection
Tuberosity
Shaped like a sword
Xiphoid
