In 1536 Elizabeth was declared illegitimate, and she was exiled.

In 1543 Elizabeth was made hier to the throne along with Mary.

Because the pope didn’t agree to Henry the eighths marriage with Anne Boleyn

She had a very good education, she was a legitimate heir, she was a role model.

She was a female, a protestant, and catholics believed she was illegitimate.

What was the privy council?
Group of 19 very powerful men, usually very wealthy nobles. They advised Elizabeth on important matters.
What power did the parliament have?
They passed laws and raised money for the queen (taxes)
Why was religion something that Elizabeth was worried about?
There had been lots of religious change since henry 8 created the protestant church of england. Edward had been protestant but Mary had been catholic, Elizabeth had to please both sides to avoid rebellion.
Why was marriage and succession a problem facing elizabeth in 1558?
people were worried that if Elizabeth died without an heir to the throne there would be war, but no one could decide on who she should marry. Elizabeth wasn’t sure she should mary as she didn’t want a man to have power over her.
Why were finances a problem facing Elizabeth in 1558?
The monarch was expected to pay for all costs of running the country, in 1558 the royal finances had been stretched by war with france and Elizabeth had inherited a debt of £300,000.
Why was the peace and wealth of the country a problem elizabeth faced in 1558?
Prices were going up but wages were not. There had been several bad harvests and 200,000 had recently died from a flu epidemic (1587). Harvests were good in 1558.
What were the threats from abroad in 1558?
England was a weak country compared to France and Spain, which were both catholic. Scotland was also being ruled by MQS, and France and Scotland were strongly linked. Elizabeth had rejected King phillip 2 proposal.
