What is the social hierarchy of Elizabethan England?
1-6
1-Nobility. 2-Gentry 3-Yeomen 4-Tenant Farmers 5-Landless or labouring pour 6-Vagrants, homeless.
What is your place in the hierarchy based off of?
Generally determined by how much land you had and whether you owned or rented it.
What did about 90% of England’s population live/work in?
Lived and worked in the countryside.
Who are yeomen?
Men who held a small amount of land or an estate. They were essentially lower gentry.
Who are Tenant farmers?
Rented land, which was usually owned by yeomen or gentry.
What was the social hierarchy of towns in Elizabethan England? (1-5)
- Merchants-often owned lots of property.
- Professionals- lawyers,clergy,doctor,teacher.
- Business owners.
- Skilled craftsmen
- Unskilled workers and unemployed.
In towns what was the hierarchy based on?
Wealth and occupation.
Key features of court in Elizabethan Government?
Made up of members of nobility. As well as the monarch’s key servants, advisers and friends.
Role of the court?
To entertain and advise the monarch. A public display of wealth and power. Courtiers had influence with monarch than actual power.
Who are courtiers?
Usually members of nobility. Spent much of their lives with Elizabeth I.
Key features of Privy Council?
Made up of leading courtiers/advisers. As well as nobles and very senior government officials, e.g Sir William Cecil. Approx 19 members chose by monarch.
Role of Privy Council?
Debate current issues/advise monarch on government policy. Made sure monarchs final decisions carried out. Oversaw law, local government and security of England.
Key features of Parliament?
Made up of House of Lords/Commons. Only be called/dismissed by monarch.
Role of parliament?
Grant extraordinary taxation. Passed laws (Act of Parliament). Offered advise to monarch.
Key features of Lords lieutenant?
Chosen by monarch. Members of nobility often on Privy Council. Essential to maintaining monarchs power and England’s defence.
