The 'situation' Flashcards
Human existence?
Existence is a ‘being-in-the-world’
humans are entangled in a concrete context
What is human freedom and determination?
Our freedom is not absolute
Freedom is constrained by the concrete circumstances of our lives i.e. ‘situated freedom’
Why can oppressed/marginalised groups not exercise absolute freedom?
Their subjectivity is structured by the existing oppressive historical situation.
What is the key part of the ‘situation’ for women?
The body
What is ‘becoming flesh’?
The process in which women are reduced to a sexual, bodily being, exposed to another’s gaze and control
How do women experience their bodies?
Women’s bodies as a constraint.
Women cannot choose how they exist, because their embodiment has been predefined by the patriarchal society.
