minimum accepted level of probability

- if level is equal to or less than this then the results are significant, the IV did affect the DV or there is a significant correlation
- this means the hypothesis should be accepted and the null rejected, meaning we are 95% sure that the IV caused the change in the DV
what do inferential statistics tell us
whether the result we have found is due to chance or down to the IV
level of significance correlation
the more stringent (lower) the level of significance, the more significant the results are (less chance of error)
intepreting results
p = probability that results are due to chance
so…
p<0.05 means that the probability that the result is due to chance is less than 5%
