The shoulder Flashcards
What is a girdle
a structure that surrounds and makes a circular area.
What is the order of shoulder articulation within the shoulder?
Scapular articulating with left clavicle, clavicle articulating with the sternum. Sternum articulating with the right clavicle and the clavicle articulating with the scapular on the right.
What does the pectoral girdle have that is different to the pectoral girdle?
There is a gap in the middle of the girdle which provides great mobility. However, when muscle is included it completes the girdle
what are the 3 true joints of the pectoral girdle?
Sternoclavicular joint
Acromioclavicular joint
Glenohumeral joint
What are the 2 other joints of the pectoral girdle?
scapulothoracic articulation
Subacromial articulation
How is the clavicle shaped?
It is an extended āsā shape which enables 180 degrees of lateral abduction
What are the features of the clavicle?
- The sternal facade in the medial side, this surface articulates with the sternum
- The impression for the costoclavicular ligament, this is to the left of the sternal facade
- The body of the clavicle which receives the muscle
- The articulation surface for the acromioclavicular joint
- Acromion (sticks out)
- trapezoid line which attaches the trapezoid ligament
What is the glenohumeral joint?
Made up of the humerus and the articular surface called the glenoid fossa
What is a fossa?
a shallow depression in the bone surface
Function of the scapular?
- articulates with the thorax which allow for large movements of the upper limb
- scapular glides around the thorax to provide more amplitude of the movement for the glenohumeral joint
