What is fetch
The distance of open sea over which the wind blows
How are waves formed
By wind moving across the surface of the sea
What is swash
A wave brakes the water rushes up the the beach
Backwash
Water returns back down the beach
Constructive waves
Waves in which the swash is greater than the backwash they deposit material
Destructive waves
Waves in which the backwash is greater than the swash they erode material and carry it away
Hydraulic action
The physical force of the waves break material off the coastline
Abrasion
Loose material is thrown against the coastline by waves
Compression
When waves crash against a cliff air trapped in the cracks and joints on the cliff face and becomes compressed
Solution
Some rocks such as limestone and chalk are dissolved by water
Attrition
The stones that are carried in the water are constantly hitting against each other
Bay
A curved area where the waves have eroded the coastline
Headland
An area of hard rock jutting into the sea
Sea caves
A tunnel at the base of a cliff
Sea arches
An arch shaped tunnel that stretches through headland
